OverigJoin the Port of Rotterdam as a Data Steward and become the guardian of data integrity in one of the world’s most innovative ports. You connect industrial operations with advanced analytics, ensuring our data is trusted, compliant, and ready to power nextgeneration AI solutions.
We are looking for a Data Steward to serve as the guardian of data trust and governance within our Digital Port Performance team. In this role, you will be the key link between complex industrial operations and cutting-edge analytics, ensuring that our data assets across Azure, Databricks, and Collibra are standardized, secure, and consistently high-quality. You are a "data translator" who can navigate the needs of diverse stakeholders — from commercial leads to external parties — while maintaining a rigorous "detective" mindset to resolve data discrepancies. As we move toward a future of dynamic, just-in-time insights, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our data foundation is not only compliant with regulations like the EU AI Act but is also robust enough to power the next generation of AI-driven port innovation.
You’ll be part of a multifunctional analytics team, comprising data scientists, data stewards, data translators and analytics specialists. Beyond your direct team, you’ll be part of data communities and working groups, so you can learn and work together with likeminded colleagues from different departments and IT. As part of the Digital Port Performance team, you’ll also have close interaction with program managers, business managers and customers of the Port of Rotterdam.
Key responsibilities include:
- Standardize and govern critical data assets related to maritime/hinterland logistics, energy transition, and port industrial activities within Azure, Collibra and Databricks.
- Partner with business stakeholders, IT and other analytics teams to define and implement data management and governance strategies that balance flexibility and security.
- Deliver reports, analyses and presentations regarding data gaps, current data products and sources, compliance guidelines, among others, related to Port Performance portfolio.
- Manage data sharing agreements and sensitivity classifications for internal and external users, ensuring compliance with company guidelines and market regulations (GDPR, EU AI Act, etc).
- Lead the definition and documentation of data objects and business rules in Collibra, Confluence and Sharepoint, ensuring that similar metrics are calculated consistently across data products and clearly communicated to stakeholders.
- Leverage emerging AI features to improve quality monitoring, data lineage and documentation, and interaction with data users.
- Knowledge and interest in semantic modelling, including building ontologies and knowledge graphs (preferably in RDF).
This position is classified in FSK
- In case of an internal transition, article 3.1 of the CAO applies.
Our commercial department is responsible for the customers of the Port of Rotterdam.
As a Data Steward, you will be part of the Digital Port Performance team. This team consists of 24 enthusiastic colleagues from diverse nationalities and backgrounds. Our goal is to utilize digital tools to achieve the port's strategy and improve its performance. We use data and analytics to identify bottlenecks and work with customers and partners to find solutions. Although we generally do not build these solutions ourselves, we coordinate and oversee their development. We collaborate with an ecosystem of start-ups, scale-ups, suppliers, and knowledge institutes.
Since digitalization is a key strategic theme, the team reports directly to our CEO. You will work closely with colleagues from the commercial department, asset management, environmental management, strategy, marketing and communications, and our subsidiary Portbase (Port Community System). Together, we strengthen the port's competitive position and reduce emissions.
You will be part of a sub-team within Customer Digital that focuses on delivering data analytics and insights that help improve sustainability, resilience and efficiency of logistics and industrial activities in the port area. Our aim is to provide a seamless experience to the more than 3,000 B2B companies operating in the Port of Rotterdam.
- Completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in STEM courses.
- At least 5 years of relevant work experience of which at least 3 years of work experience with data management, data stewardship or data governance with the DAMA DMBOK framework.
- Proven experience implementing or managing Data Intelligence platforms (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, Alation) to document lineage and business glossaries.
- Strong understanding and experience working with large datasets and relational databases, including proficiency in SQL or similar query languages.
- Proven ability to act as a data translator — bridging the gap between technical data teams and business stakeholders to promote the adoption of data governance and management best practices.
Competencies we find important for success in this role:
- Problem-solving skills: You assess information for completeness and reliability. You analyze a large amount of information to identify possible causes of a problem. With your expertise and experience, you can anticipate potential consequences and identify critical points. You remain open to new ideas to further enhance your problem-solving abilities.
- Communicating effectively: You provide structured and concise information, both orally and in writing. You communicate clearly and pleasantly, actively listening and clarifying any uncertainties.
- Customer Orientation: You empathize with the customer. You maintain active communication with the customer, being clear about mutual (realistic) expectations and the current situation. You understand that, in relation to customers, captains, suppliers, etc., you represent the Port Authority. You behave accordingly, remaining calm and friendly in all communication.
- Quality Focus: You perform your work in an orderly and structured manner. You check your own work for correctness and completeness, paying attention to detail. Additionally, you handle confidential information correctly, contributing to the high quality of your work.
